The present study was designed to investigate whether the hydrolysis of octacalcium phosphate (OCP) affects the release of beta-lactoglobulin (beta-Lg) adsorbed on OCP and its hydrolyzed apatitic products (OCP hydrolyzates). The release of beta-Lg at pH 4.0 tended to be inhibited with the advancement of hydrolysis from OCP into apatite. The previous studies reported that OCP can be converted to apatite and is subjected to osteoclastic resorption when implanted in bone. The tendency of the protein desorption from OCP and its hydrolyztaes at acidic pH suggests that these calcium phosphates may be used as carrier of cytokines in bone tissue engineering by OCP.
