Abstract

The reusing of oyster shell deposits at the dump yard can be considered as an indispensable work for reducing the amount of wastes and conserving the scenery in the place of production. The objectives of present study are to investigate experimentally the strength and bearing capacity characteristics of stabilized soils containing crushed oyster shell and to clarify its applicability as subgrade materials by exploring test results. The results obtained from laboratory tests indicated that the unconfined compressive strength and CBR value increased in proportion to the stabilizer additive content and curing time. In addition, the coefficient of subgrade reaction and field CBR value converted from the impact acceleration value (Ia) showed that the bearing capacity of improved subgrade increased with an increase in crushed oyster shell content. Based on these results, it may be beneficial to use crushed oyster shell as subgrade materials.
