An improved computer-actuator on-line test system of the braced frames with the new hysteretic damping device has been developed, and the good accuracy of the present system has been verified by various response tests of the single-story frames in the previous report. Also, the accuracy and validity of two numerical restoring force characteristic models for the damping device in the earthquake response analyses have been certified. In this report, based on these results, seismic response on-line tests of the multi-story braced frames with the present damping devices are performed, in which as the restoring force of the damping devices are used the values from the experiment for only one specific story and the numerical model for the others. A seismic design procedure of the multi-story braced frames with the damping devices with the bi-linear restoring force characteristics is presented, and is followed by seismic response analyses to investigate optimum values of the dynamic characteristics for moderately tall buildings. The accuracy of the employed on-line test system especially for the multi-story frames is certified by Multi-Degree-Of-Freedom elastic response tests. After these preliminaries, inelastic seismic response on-line tests are performed on two 7-stories braced frames, one of which has the optimum dynamic characteristic and the other does not, and show that the present hysteretic dampig device has good restoring force characteristics for absorbing the seismic energy in the multi-story frames as well as in the single-story under the strong earthquake ground motion. Also, the absorption energy and plastic deformation capacity required for the perforated steel plate used in the damping device are clarified through the present seismic response tests.
