Abstract

The easiness to find the best route is one of the most important features for the design of transit maps. In the previous studies, Nagao et al. (2002) and Ukai et al. (2002) proposed guidelines for the graphic design of lines and station symbols. In the present study, we evaluated the usability of the current Tokyo Subway Map from psychological approaches. The results suggested that users occasionally misread the map when (1) one station has more than one name, (2) crossing lines have similar colors, and (3) the easiest route look longer than the other lines and that minor redesigning of station symbols may improve the usability of subway maps.
