Abstract
In this paper, we study on the cost evaluation techniques for mode selection in the video coding. In the video coding standard such as MPEG, it is significant to select the optimal mode from some candidate-modes in order to improve the coding efficiency. The Rate-Distortion Optimization (RDO) techniques is often applied to select the optimal mode. Although it is possible to select the mode that maximizes the coding efficiency, it needs expensive operations to calculate rate and distortion. We propose the method that accelerates RDO by using the RD model and the Zero-Block Detection. We implemented the proposed method on H.264 reference software, and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method by experiments.
