Abstract
Electrochemical supercapacitors utilizing nanostructured ruthenium-oxide based electrodes are promising as high power, high energy and long life power sources. We have succeeded in increasing the capacitance by preparing various nanostructured ruthenium-based oxides. Here we report the charge storage mechanism of ruthenium-oxide based electrodes and the fabrication of various highly functionalized electrodes. The charge storage in acidic electrolyte using ruthenium-based oxides can be deconvoluted into double-layer charging, surface redox charging and grain charging. These different modes of charging are dependent on various parameters, including structure, composition, and charging rate.
