Description
In recessive bop1/bop2 double mutant of Arabidopsis thaliana, leaf growth does not stop because of fomation of extra leaf blades along petiole. Thus BOP1 and BOP2 genes (BOP genes) are thought to regulate determinacy of leaf development in A. thaliana. Interestingly, similar indeterminacy of leaf development is also seen in leaves of genus Monophyllaea (Gesneriaceae).<br>In this study we examined if indeterminate leaf growth of Monophyllaea glabra is attributable to deficiency of BOP homologs. Our analysis revealed that BOP homologs isolated from M. glabra could functionally complement the recessive bop1/bop2 double mutant of A. thaliana. In addition, expression pattern of those homologs in M. grabla resembles that of the BOP genes in A. thaliana. Therefore it seems unlikely that deficiency of the BOP homologs of M. glabra is responsible for its indeterminate leaf growth. We will also discuss other possible candidate mechanisms responsible for indeterminate leaf growth of Monophyllaea.
