The compressive strength of concrete containing fly ash was measured with time and the effects of fly ash-to-cement ratio and specific surface area of fly ash on the strength was investigated to deduce the numerical prediction model for the strength development of the concrete. A coefficient, α is introduced into the model to express the contribution of the fly ash to the strength development. At a very early age, α is independent of time and demonstrates the filling-up effects of fly ash causing the acceleration of cement hydration. On the other hand, it is time-dependent and increases with the progress of pozzolanic reaction of fly ash with calcium hydroxide at a long-term age. And α increases as the specific surface area of fly ash increases. The model was verified to universally and precisely explain the strength development of concrete containing fly ash by a comparison between the predicted strengths and data obtained by other researchers.
