Abstract
Basic characteristics of overturning ratios of rigid bodies due to large input motions are examined by analytical studies. As the results, it becomes clear that overturning ratios of rigid bodies are influenced on sizes and shapes of rigid bodies and levels and predominant frequencies of input motions. Based on these studies, a curve that can generally describe the relations between overturning ratios of rigid bodies and amplification of input motions is proposed. Furthermore, by revising this curve, another curve is also proposed which describe the relations between overturning ratios of tombstones and the maximum velocity of ground motions under large earthquakes.
