Knowledge obtained from optimal fitting of the State Dependent Model (SDM), that is a class of non-linear time series models, to strong motion seismograms data is described in this paper. Techniques for estimating the state dependent coefficients of SDM and for selecting the SDM's order are studied together with verification by computer simulations. Estimated dynamic characteristics such as natural frequencies, damping factors and transfer functions of the generating system of earthquake ground motions, which can be identified with the SDM fitted to the motions, are presented. From comparisons of SDMs with linear time series models, both the SDMs and the linear models were fitted to very strong and medium strong motion seismograms data recorded at an observation station on soft soil condition, the conclusion that the SDM is an appropriate class of time series models to represent non-linearities of the generating system due to earthquake strong motion has been drawn.
