Abstract
White cane is the most common tool that assists visually impaired persons in walking. It is simple, light and available anywhere even without walking support facilities such as textured paving block. However, it has not enough range of obstacle detection and certain obstacles may not be detected. Our study aims at developing a handheld or wearable device which has wider detection range and can detect obstacles which white cane can′t in order to compliments white cane. This device utilizes ultrasonic sensors to search wide range and vibration motors to present obstacle information with patterns of vibrotactile stimulation.
