An English allotment garden has long history, and it is taken as a model of a Japanese one frequently. The purpose of this study is to clarify the historical characteristics, the significant factors that formed the current aspect of the allotment gardens established in the middle of the 20th century from the end of the 19th century, considering its social background, urbanization process, user class, point of view to allotment gardens based on the Allotment Act. We take the 25 allotment gardens in Borough of Epsom & Ewell, suburban town of London, as a case study in detail. Findings are mainly as follows. 1) Allotment function results from social factors, such as two world wars, unemployment rate, and users' demand. 2) Local authority decides an abolition of allotment garden considering location from the nearest station or other open-spaces. 3) The allotment gardens for temporary purpose, such as food supply to the poor people, tend to be abolished.
