Abstract
The purpose of this study is to consider the structure of urban landscape through the human behavioral systems approach. If we accept this viewpoint that human beings are components of landscape, it becomes considerably easier to understand that the landscape of a city has been changed by the behavior of human beings. Kobe City was selected as the case study area which was opened as a trade port in 1868 and has kept growing ever since. In order to understand the resident's cognition on Kobe, twenty-five areas were selected by its characteristic landscape. The methods of Dual Scaling and Cluster Analysis were used based upon the data of the interview to discuss the resident's cognition of landscape. Finally, it was made clear that the landscape image of Kobe is organized by fourmajor images that are elements of urban, residential, green mountain and seaside areas.
