Abstract

Recently, the waterfront revegetation using Phragmites australis (Cay.) Trin. draws public attention worldwide. However, burdens of labor, time, and cost related to this technique have been enormous and there are many tasks to be solved further. In this paper, therefore, a new method which enables the cut down of the above mentioned burden is developed and proposed. By this method, we could create a waterfront environment where Phragmites flourished, by only inserting short segments of the culms of Phragmites into a palm fiber mat which is frequently used as a revegetation material. This method is also superior to the frequently used conventional method in which the seedlings of Phragmites are planted on a palm fiber mat with respect to the effect in revegetation, and reduction in the cost and labor of placement. On the other hand, it became clear that culms with thin basal diameter and/or dry culms of Phragmites are not suitable for this method.
