Abstract
In this study, we demonstrate a terahertz controlling device by inserting a nematic liquid crystal defect layer in a one-dimensional photonic crystal (1D-PC) possessing a stop band in the terahertz frequency range. The 1D-PC was composed of a water free fused silica and air and possessed a 100m-thick defect layer in which liquid crystal existed: a defect mode transmission peak was observed and agreed well with the spectral position predicted numerically. The frequency tuning properties of the defect mode was investigated upon inducing a homeotropic-planar alignment switching of the liquid crystal defect layer.
