Description
We investigate the influence of acoustic streaming on a cholesteric liquid crystal(CLC) molecular alignment. An increase of a cell thickness leads to a decrease in an ordering parameter of the CLC, because an alignment force effects in the vicinity of a polyimide surface. In the thick cell, the initial CLC does not have a planar alignment but a focal conic state in spite of the surface being coated with a planar polyimide and rubbed unidirectionally. To improve the CLC alignment, the acoustic streaming is induced using vibration of a piezoelectric ceramic plate. The acoustic streaming changes the CLC alignment from a focal conic state to a planar alignment. The treated cell reduces scattering and has the sharp band edges in a stop band.
