Abstract

Age of large debris avalanche deposits in Akaishi Range of central Japan was determined using dendro wiggle matching (WM) with Intcal09 and OxCal.  Formerly, based on conventional calendar calibration, this debris avalanche was considered to be occuurred during the period from 780-870 AD.  However, new WM shows its age was  778-792 AD.  Accordinfg to historical documents and literatures, no paleoearthquakes were found in this period.  Meanwhile, major losses resulting from floods near study area in September 779 AD were described in an old document SHOKU-NIHONGI.  Heavy rain in this time was a possible trigger of the debris avalanche.  <br>
