Abstract

he unique functions of sesamin, a lignan which is exclusively occurring in sesame seed (or sesame seed oil), are now waiting for a chance of "Open Sesame". Recent studies on sesamin clearly indicated its multiple biological functions. These include; (a) specific inhibition of Δ5 desaturase of polyunsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis In an arachidonic acidproducing fungus, Mortierella alpina, (b) interference with mammalian metabolism of linoleic acid, and hence, eicosanoid production, through an interference with Δ5 desaturase, (c) enhancement of the hepatic detoxication of chemicals and alcohol possibly through an Increased microsomal activity, (d) protective effect on chemically-induced mammary cancer, and (e) antioxidative potential in vivo. More preferable functions are expected to sesamin and the related lignans.
