Abstract

Recently, localized heavy rainfalls over heavily urbanized area cause severe damages in Japan. Some studies indicate that urban environment intensify the development of cumulonimbus clouds, but it is still an open question. In this study, the effect of urban environment on a localized heavy rainfall near Zoshigaya, Tokyo on August 5 2008 was investigated using cloud resolving model including precise urban canopy model. The experiment considering realistic urban features reproduced the amount of rainfall accumulated from 11 to 14 JST. In the second experiment, considering the weaker urban heating, the rainfall amount over Tokyo was clearly reduced. It was indicated that the urban heating can be one of the triggers of this localized heavy rainfall.
