Description

This study aimed to evaluate whether periodontopathic bacteria could influence halitosis of patients with periodontal disease. We examined the relationship between factors related to halitosis and periodontopathic bacteria in tongue coat and saliva from patients with main complaint for halitosis. Patients with periodontitis had a stronger halitosis than patients without periodontal disease, and a significant higher frequency detected F. nucleatum in tongue coat using PCR compared to patients without periodontal disease. Furthermore, patients who improved periodontal health and halitosis had a tendency to decrease proportions of periodontopathic bacteria in saliva. Therefore, these results suggested that periodontopathic bacteria of patients with periodontal disease might influence the generation of halitosis.
