Description

TCitalopram was studied for its repeated effects on basal and handling-induced noradrenaline(NA) release in the rat basolateral amygdaloid nucleus(BLA). The repeated administrations of citalopram remarkably lowered the basal release of NA in the BLA to about 30% of those in the control rats. The handling stimuli failed to increase NA release in the rats treated with citalopram repeatedly. The present results indicate that the repeated administrations of citalopram result in a reduced activity of NA neurons and abolishment of stress-induced increase in NA release in the BLA. Inactivated NA neurons in the BLA could be implicated in the mechanism underlying the anxiolytic properties of citalopram.
