Description
In mid-80s, catastrophic outburst of CO2 gas from Lakes Monoun and Nyos, Cameroon, claimed about 1800 lives. Recharge of CO2 from the lake bottom still continues at both lakes. To avoid recurrence of such gas disasters, degassing systems were installed at Lake Nyos in 2001 and at Lake Monoun in 2003. Based on the results of our monitoring for the last 21 years, the rates of CO2 recharge and removal were estimated. A proposal to make the lakes safe will be given.
