Description

In order to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of dermoscopy for malignant melanoma (MM) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC), we examined 974 cases examined by taken dermoscopy photography and confirmed by histological diagnosis from 1999 to 2005 in the Niigata Cancer Center Hospital. By dermoscopy evaluation, the sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of MM were 91% (69/76 cases) and 99% (886/897 cases),whereas the sensitivity and specificity for BCC were 92% (156/170 cases) and 97% (780/803 cases). The most frequent clinical diagnosis among the false negative cases was seborrheic keratosis. Dermoscopy showed a significantly higher sensitivity for the diagnosis of MM and BCC than naked-eye evaluation for these seven years. Therefore, it was confirmed that dermoscopy has a high utility for the clinical differential diagnosis of these two tumors.
