Abstract

The present study aimed to clarify nurses' views on fall risks among patients and the status of fall prevention care provided in hospitals, and examine nurses' judgments and care procedures as the causes of falls. We conducted semi-structured interviews with eleven nurses working in acute-care hospitals who were members of a "committee on fall prevention", and a qualitative inductive analysis of the results. As a result, thirteen categories of factors affecting the fall risk in patients were identified, and "the structure of factors influencing the occurrence of fall-related accidents and their prevention" was revealed. Nurses considered that patients "whose conditions were unstable" and "who can move by themselves" were at a high risk of falls. Causes of falls attributed to nurses included: [inadequate sharing of information on the unstable conditions of patients] [inconsistent results of fall risk assessments conducted by nurses] [interruptions in the observation of patients] [errors in risk assessment including the overestimation of patients' physical capabilities] [conflicts over whether a restraint should be used]. To prevent fall accidents in acute-care hospitals, it is important for nurses to share information with each other to obtain consistent fall risk assessment results.
