Abstract

Qualitative research showed a classification by significance accorded to therapeutic exercise, and the present research was performed to generalize this classification, by preparing a tool to classify type 2 diabetes patients by significance accorded to therapeutic exercise, to facilitate therapeutic exercise continuation. Questions were prepared using qualitative-research categories, and after evaluating the appropriateness of each, a draft including 31 questions was prepared. A survey of 296 type 2 diabetes patients was performed using a questionnaire and interviews, and, using a criteria-related method, with an interview-based pattern classification as the criteria, questions showing superior discrimination capacity were selected. Finally, 21 questions, in five categories, were selected, and their reliability was ascertained to some degree. In addition, for each interview pattern, score comparison and discriminant analysis were carried out for the questions, to verify the validity of the construct, and demonstrate pattern discrimination effectiveness. <br>In conclusion, the tool prepared is effective for ascertaining the significance accorded to therapeutic exercise by type 2 diabetes patients. It is considered that effective use can be made of this tool in supporting stable continuation of therapeutic exercise.
