Description

The purpose of this study was to clarify the diet behaviors, body image and sex role awareness of university students, and the factors which affect diet behaviors. The participants were 468 male and female students in the 1st to 4th grades at H University. A questionnaire method was used which used the "factor I" (diet) subscale of the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT) to measure diet behaviors, the original visual analogue scale for measurement of body image, and the MHF scale for measurement of sex role awareness.<br> The women's ideal physique was a normal type with more height and less weight than their actual physique-almost a thin type. The women's healthy physique was a normal type with less weight. The men's ideal physique was a normal type with more height and more weight. The men's healthy physique was a normal type with less weight than their actual physique. The desire to be thin was stronger in women than in men, and the diet behavior score was also higher in women. The desire to be thin is strongly involved in diet behavior, which suggests that dieting behavior in women has occurred regardless of actual physique. The women appeared to be dieting to achieve a thin physique that was "more feminine". Therefore an educational program is required to promote positive perception of self-physique.
