Description
The aim of this study is to find out the factors that cause perceived difficulties in clinical teaching of nursing and their relationships with the backgrounds of the instructors. 902 clinical instructors who belonged to 38 hospitals with 500 or more beds in the Kanto District answered the questionnaire in which they are asked what kind of difficulties they have to face in clinical teaching. As the result of the analysis, four main factors have been located. They are "lack in teaching ability," "psychological distance to the students," "teaching environment or contents of clinical teaching," and "other human relations in the hospital."<br> Concerning the relationships of these factors with the instructors' backgrounds, instructors with longer work experience as well as teaching experience and higher positions and qualifications tend to feel less difficulties caused by "lack in teaching ability." As for difficulties related to "psychological distance to students" is greater in instructors with 6-8 year experience in nursing than in those with 3-5 year experience. Head nurses have significantly greater difficulties related to "other human relations in the hospital," suggesting an influence of their responsible position. Instructors who have obtained the certificate of completion of prefectural training seminars for clinical instructors of nursing practice tend to feel less difficulties while teaching, indicating that a training specialized in clinical teaching has a positive effect on clinical teaching.
