Forty three kinds of polycyclic hydrocarbons (PAH) containing three to six aromatic rings were determined in 6 suspended particle samples collected from Tokyo Bay using high resolution capillary gas chromatography. PAH concentration(Σ=43: the sum of concentration of 43 PAH identified) ranges from 4.46 ng/l to 49.5 ng/l-water sample. The concentration of major 13 parent PAH (the sum of concentrations of phenanthrene, fluoranthene, pyrene, benzo(a)fluorene, benzo(b)fluorene, benzo(a)anthracene, chrysene (+triphenylene), benzo(j)fluoranthene + benzo(k)fluoranthene, benzo(e)pyrene, benzo(a)pyrene, indeno ( 1, 2, 3-cd)pyrene and benzo(ghi)perylene) ranges from 3.60 ng/l to 25.7 ng/l-water sample. The concentrations of suspended-form PAH in water samples were similar each other, except for the water sample collected near the mouth of River Sumidagawa, whose PAH concentration being 5-10 fold as large as those for the other 5 water samples. However, PAH concentration expressed as nanogram per gram of suspended particles for a sample collected from the center of the Bay is higher than that from the area near estuary. No large difference in the relative composition of parent PAH was observed among 6 samples, but the relative percentage of phenanthrene in the samples collected in November was slightly larger than the samples in May. The percentage of phenanthrene, fluoranthene and pyrene in the total parent PAH for suspended particles was generally higher than those for Bay sediments.
