Description
In this hospital, a large number of interns and residents participate in ultrasonography training involving patients as an optional course. However, they often fail to acquire adequate skills and knowledge. Therefore, with the aim of helping them learn basic scanning methods and improve the skills required for ultrasonography, the hospital organized extracurricular ultrasonography training. In the training program, which consisted of focused assessment with sonography for trauma (FAST), echocardiography, and abdominal ultrasound examinations, one of each intern pair played the role of a patient. More than 90% of interns participated in each of the three types of session. Regarding the annual maximum number of training sessions attended by individuals, an intern participated in echocardiography training 19 times (median: 6) and abdominal ultrasound examinations 13 times (median: 6). Considering the fact that more than 90% of interns participated in these extracurricular training sessions, the training program is effective and has been praised by the hospital and adopted as part of its education system. A more effective education system can be established by incorporating extracurricular training, in which one of each intern pair plays the role of a patient under the supervision of an engineer, combined with elective clinical training.
