Nonylphenol (NP) in water, sediment and plankton were measured with respect to the distribution and the historical trend of NP around Hiroshima Bay. The NP concentrations measured were 0.57-0.71 and 0.01-0.34 μg/L in river and seawaters, respectively, 2.0-52 and < 0.9-28 ng/g dry wt. in river and sea surface sediments, respectively, and 260-1,600 ng/g dry wt. in the plankton samples. In the river water, most (>90 %) of NP was dissolved forms. Being as far away from the estuary, the concentrations of NP in surface sediment decreased, suggesting that NP is accumulated in the estuary region. In the core samples of sea sediment, the highest concentration of NP was detected at the depth corresponding the 1980th. It indicates that NP contamination decreased from 1980th to older, and then declined after 1980th. Calculating the bioconcentration factor (BCF) of NP from the concentrations of NP in sea-water and in plankton, it was ranged 103-104 and these values were as same as those of BCF from the fishes which were reported previously.
