The concentration and molecular size distribution of UV-absorbing organic materials in river waters were measured by high-performance gel permeation chromatography (GPC) with UV detection without a prior isolation of organics. The size distribution of UV-absorbing organic materials was measured with the combination of ultrafiltration method. To validity the separation of UV-absorbing oragnic materials by the GPC column, humic subsatnces were used because UV-absorbing organic materials occupy by humic substances with different molecular sizes. The high-performance GPC can be used to separate on the basis of molecular size differences for the humic and fulvic acid standards from International Humic Substances Society. The convenient method by high-performance GPC was applied to the waters from Kuji River, which runs downstream through the forested hills and agricultural plain. The water samples were collected at ten sampling sites in the Kuji River system in June 1995, and filtered with Whatman GF/F glass-fiber filters. The river waters (DOC concentration of 0.7 to 2.6mgC/l) before and after the ultrafiltration by ultrafilters with cut-off molecular size of 10,000 and 5,000 dalton were injected into the GPC column and was monitored at 280 nm. Features of chromatograms of the river water samples were in agreement with the humic substances isolated from the river water. The UV-absorbing organic materials in the Kuji River system consisted mainly of molecular size of less than 10,000 daltons (82 ± 3%). The concentrations of DOC and UV-absorbing organic materials increased downstream.
