Description

We report a case of optic nerve sheath meningioma treated with intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) in a patient with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2). A 12-year-old girl was referred for asymptomatic optic disc swelling in the right eye. Visual acuity was 1.5 in both eyes. Visual field testing by Goldmann perimetry showed blind spot enlargement in the right eye. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a right optic nerve sheath meningioma (ONSM) and bilateral acoustic tumor, which were diagnosed as NF2 after genetic examination by the pediatrician. After 6 months of follow-up, the ONSM was treated with IMRT because of the deteriorated visual field; the papilloedema resolved with treatment. The visual acuity and visual field in the right eye were maintained for 18 months after IMRT. IMRT is an effective method for treatment of optic sheath meningioma in cases of NF2. Further follow-up will reveal the risk of complications associated with radiation therapy for optic atrophy.
