Description

This paper analyses the internal and the external spatial composition of a house. First, 42 external mediation spaces (as dedicated external spaces which exist between the inside of a house and the surrounding environment of the house) of 31 houses were quantified, based on the characteristics of their shape. Second, the external mediation spaces were statistically analyzed and classified according to their quantified drawing information. Three conclusions were drawn from the above analysis : (1) Spatial compositions of the houses with external mediation spaces are defined by the following five factors ; namely, largeness of the external mediation spaces, composition with one space, large number of rooms, inclusiveness, connectivity. (2) There are five types of external mediation spaces ; namely, living room accessory type, connecting private rooms type, included in residence type, extended one room type, vice living room type. (3) It can be argued that the external mediation spaces designed by architects are spaces which can add richness to the interior of the houses, while the external mediation spaces themselves can serve the similar role of internal rooms.
