Abstract

A 58-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with a chief complaint of abdominal pain. Upper GI series showed a protruded lesion 5 cm in diameter at the second portion of the duodenum. Endoscopic examination revealed the big polypoid lesion with cauliflower-like surface and thick stalk. The biopsy specimen showed Group III ; adenoma, borderline malignancy.
Surgical polypectomy was performed. No lymph node swelling was noted. The resected polyp was 8.5×4.5cm in size. Histological examination revealed well differentiated adenocarcinoma with the invasion limited to the mucosal layer. There are no recurrent signs at present one year and four months after the operation.
Early duodenal cancer more than 5 cm in size is rare, our case was only the 18th in Japan.
