Abstract
The Yi Sun-shin Bridge, on the Yeosu National Industrial Complex Approach Road, is the longest suspension bridge in South Korea, connecting Myodo Island in Yeosu City with Gwangyang. Constructed with the purpose of improving traffic and advancing regional development, it was also meant to symbolize technological achievement. Therefore, its design had to be representative of South Korea. With these considerations in view, we endeavored to "present the philosophy that inspired Korean nationhood in a globalized appearance, incorporating the elements of modernity, reasonability and good taste." This slogan acted as the fundamental principle for our overall design plan, dictating the overall proportions of the bridge and the form of each structural member, down to the choice of materials. Considerations of economic and structural reasonability dictated the structural form and basic design of the bridge. However, we gave equal importance to aesthetic considerations throughout, from the design stage until the completion of the project.
