Description
Computations based on the MHD(magnetohydrodynamics)model play important roles in the controlled nuclear fusion research as indispensable means for experimental analyses and designing new devices. In this article we survey several major topics concerning the model and numerical methods for analyses of MHD equilibrium and stability of a plasma confined in a tokamak, the most promising magnetic confinement device as a candidate of a future fusion reactor. As for the stability the spectral analysis of a linearized ideal MHD system is described in detail and resistive MHD analyses are also outlined. Throughout the artical emphases are put on features of the numerical solution methods associated with the MHD system rather than the physics implication of the solutions.
