<p>This essay examines the influence of Sazanami's Old Tales on Miyazawa Kenji's stories for children. The development and the ending of the fifth version of Kenji's story “Manazuru To Daria” (Manazuru and Dahlia) strongly resemble those of “Kiku No Mon” (The Gate of the Chrysanthemum) in Sazanami's Old Tales and it is very likely his revisions for the fifth version were based on it. I have compared the structures of development and the methods in personification in the two stories and discussed the added significance the incorporation of the ending of the latter had on Kenji's story. In addition, I have pointed to the social overtones of the public exhibitions of chrysanthemums and Dahlias in the Iwate area, where Kenji took active parts in them while working on the revisions. I have argued his fifth version of “Manazuru To Daria” critiques the glorification of the Emperor in “Kiku No Mon.” Furthermore, I have discussed the differences and shared characteristics, discovered through comparison, in the methods of Sazanami's Old Tales and Kenji's stories, taking into consideration the criticism of Sazanami's Old Tales in the stories for children during the Taisho Era. Kenji produced his methods by integrating the two.</p>
