Abstract

In this paper, we analyzed factors determining the length of childcare leave of female regular employees. Analyzing the data of the 'longitudinal survey of adults in the 21st century' the 2002 cohort, we confirmed the following facts. First, when we estimate an ordered logit model or a tobit model, the commuting time, the company size, and the job contents have a significant influence on the length of child care leave. Second, women with a child born between January and March are more likely to take childcare leave of more than 10 months, and this trend is strengthened by the enforcement in 2005 of the revised Child Care and Family Care Leave Act. Third, if there is an on-site nursing facility in either of the couple's workplace, there is a lesser probability of women taking childcare leave longer than 10 months. These results imply that, in order to help women get back to work early, it may be required to promote telework and satellite offices as well as make transportation more convenient.
