Most mothers leave their work before or after the first child birth and re-enter labor market after the children got older. However, most mothers return to work as part time workers. We made interviews with 10 working mothers who continued their full-time work at large private firms after childbirth by the use of child care leave. The interviewees were selected from members of labor unions. The interviews were carried out from Nov.2009 to Mar.2010. The study suggests five points. First, their aspirations for a job were not always strong when they graduated from school. Second, before their first child birth, they had the various work experiences and excellent evaluations at work. Third, they had a long-term prospect of career before having their first child. Forth, working mothers are not satisfied with their evaluations when they are given low evaluation only because they worked short hours. They say they are now more efficient at workplace and hope for promotion. Fifth, they worry about the requirements of long hours and responsibility after promotion because they need to strike a balance between multiple roles as professionals and mothers. These findings suggest the importance of equal treatment of gender at firms, as well as the importance of better directed career education at school. For women to continue work, having a long-term prospect of a career through various work experience and good evaluations before childbirth are also important. Working mothers hope for promotion and fair evaluation for short work week.
