Description

This paper aims to analyze the conditions of Minbak which are budget accommodation run by local residents in the rural areas of Korea. The basic style of Minbak in Korea is providing guest rooms without meals since the deregulation by the government in 1994. The study area is Namhae-island Gyeongsannam-do Korea. Minbak houses in Namhae-island are mostly located close to the beach, and also near the “experience village” developed on the theme of offering experiences of agriculture, fisheries and rural life to urban visitors. The family-run Minbaks are making arrangements to balance their labor for both Minbaks management and the work of agriculture and fisheries. And during tourist season, space in the Minbak houses is divided into family zones and guest areas so that the family members of the Minbak can avoid contacts with guests.
