In this paper, I discuss the potential and the challenge of location information and its applications for local communities in the field of socio-informatics. Citizen groups have been playing an important role in providing solutions to various needs of citizens. Many of them work in a community setting, and the information created by them includes location. On the other hand, development of devices with GPS function and social media makes it easy to handle location information. First, I show the current status of usage of maps on citizen groups' Websites. Then, I describe three location-based systems, two are for town walking event and the other is for local safety, I have studied. They have been used in local communities. Considering the results of these studies, I show the challenges to be addressed in the field of socio-informatics from a standpoint of information system on the web.
