Abstract
<p>Satirical poems called “kyōka” appeared in the late eighteenth century and became very popular in the Tenmei Period. But for a poet and bookseller named Hamabe-no-Kurohito, however, there must have been no such fad for “kyōka” at that time. Karagoromo-Kisshū was also an important figure who played a central role at the salon-like society of “kyōka” poetry in Edo. In the second year of the Tenmei Period, Kisshū was defeated by his rival Yomono-Akara, who replaced him to dominate the scene. Tsutaya-Jūzaburō was another leading poet of the age, but his popularity had been on the wane since the Kansei Reforms.</p>
