Abstract
In recent years, a lot of important works of Japanese literature from classic to modern have been published. But contrary to our expectation, we have not so many translations of modern works and the number of minor vriters' ones cannot be compared with that of famous writers!. Although our points of view are quite different from natives because of cultural background, this gap is potentially a creative one, and it might well be closed if more Japanese and foreign scholars had an opportunity to work together. New methods of literary analysis have been tried and become popular more and more, but we have not obtained enough results yet. More mutual projects and jojnt efforts on critical methodologies might well produce both higher level of research in the States and a broading of attitudes toward research in Japan.
