Abstract
As a poet, Sakutato made his literary debut in the 12th year of Taisho. At that time he was influenced greatly by Kitahara Hakushu, though the process and significance of Hakushu's influences has never been clearly known or discussed. Sakutaro is deeply touched by Hakushu's love with a married woman and his sense of moral agony as described in the two collections of poems, Kiri no Hana and Aisho-Hen. This leads Sakutaro to reevaluate Omoide (another collection of Hakushu's poems). From this he comes to establish his poetical viewpoint. He describes poetry as a truth realized by the pure eyes of an infant. Here lies the greatest significance of Hakushu's influences on Sakutaro.
