The phenomenon of light, emitted by the Buddha or the Three Treasures for the salvation of a living beings, is a symbol of the Buddhist Law. The narrative of the Konjaku Monogatarishu is focussed on the realization of miracles involving light, thus serving as an expression of the desire for salvation from the latter days of the Law. I Where Buddha's light fails to reach, darkness prevails. Darkness signifies the underside of the kingdom. The depiction of darkness does not rely merely on vision ; the writing seizes on the fear stalking humankind. Demons, robbers, and warriors appear as the denizens of this underworld. The narrative attempts to recuperate them into the world of order, but the effort fails, chiefly because of the wavering portrayal of the warriors. The narrative gains in insight and expressiveness as it proceeds from light to darkness, but at the cost of the unraveling of the tightly knit structure of the Buddhist Law section and the Imperial Law section(the lay section) from within.
