Description

I attempt to explain the narrative conventions as a form of grammar that constructs monogatari texts. Compounding or dismantling of the expression system brings plural narrative conventions into existence.ln the Heian Era, Hagoromo style(I) is the leading convention on which especially long narratives are based. Urashima style (II)is in the symmetrical position. The Hagoromo style is seenas though reflected in a mirror. In addition, the combination of the "Ikyo Tan" and the sexes of the central characters creates other styles : Miwayama style (III )and Sumiyoshi style (IV), which can also be called Alice style. I discuss the relationship of narrative conventions and imageries of monogatari, the attitude of turning the realities into the objects of monogatari, and finally the conventions which determine long narratives or short narratives.
