Abstract

If, as Mr. Tetsuo Yamaori argues, the Middle Ages is a period characterized by "the discovery of the value of feet," that does not exclude the possibility of the sensitivity of the ancient or Heian aristocrats to the significance of the body. In this paper, I will first attempt to confirm the earth-bound nature of feet and their heterogeneity demonstrated in Kojiki. Next, I will maintain that in Makuranososhi or The Tales of the Genji, the feet bear a special significance precisely because they are rarely exposed. In short, I will stress that feet, through their differential relation with shoes, cause various dynamics to be produced in the stories.
