Description

It is well known that Okuma Kotomichi called the mere imitation of old waka poems "Dekuuta" and critically announced that one should make the poems born out of the experience of one's own age. But there were those who deliberately attempted to make what was called "Dekuuta" out of the respect for imitation of the classics. Hagiwara Hiromichi was one of them, and his attempt, which could be considered as futile today, still had its meaning. In this paper, I have considered that significance mainly in comparison with the writings of Inoue Bun-yu, of the Edo school, who also criticized Hiromichi's theory of Waka.
