Description

This paper is an attempt to reevaluate the literary significance of Shigejo, known mainly as wife of Ogai. The heroine of Shigejo's novel Adabana totally lacks the feeling of jealousy. This idiosyncratic characterization works to the effect of revealing the views of those who are involved in the heroine's marriage, on the issues of women and marriage. Moreover, it can be pointed out that the way in which the novel depicts the differing attitudes of the old and the young through the filter of the heroine's feelings indicates to the reader that those apparently opposing attitudes may after all be gripped by the common obsession in their subconscious.
