Abstract

The section called "Koshirakawa-hakko" is the most important part in Makura-no-soshi not only because the curious movement of the oxcart - stopping and then retiring - calls people's attention, but also because it causes various kinds of feelings and discourses among them. While the section has as its historical background the heavily political situation where Emperor Kazan was forced to step down, it suggests the text's expressive power of transcending such "realities" through the oxcart's extra-linguistic movement, which resists any articulation.
